Q:  Are carbs bad for me?  ~Patti L.

A:  Understanding carbohydrates is very important when it comes to your diet and knowing if you should avoid them or not.   Carbs are composed of starches, sugar and fiber.  They are the most common source of energy found in our food and most carbs are broken down into glucose, a type of sugar. Choosing carbs full of fiber will allow them to slowly be absorbed into our system, avoiding spikes in blood sugar levels.
Bad carbs usually are refined and processed with no fiber and can be deemed as empty calories.  Athletes need complex and simple carbohydrates for fuel. The amount of carbs you should consume will depend on how much energy you expend during your daily workouts.   Don’t be scared of carbs as they are not bad for you, it is the amount you eat and the type of carb that can make it difficult for you to lose weight or even maintain your current body weight.   On average, it is good to consume a diet consisting 45% of carbs.
