Interview: Daytona Beach Chief of Police


Have you ever wondered what fitness meant to law enforcement?  We did, so we schedule an interview with the Chief of Police in the city of Daytona Beach, Florida.  In this interview we asked Chief Mike Chitwood some personal and general questions in regards to his fitness.  Here is what he had to say:

It is important to stay active not only for the physical benefits (staving off health issues like high blood pressure, etc.) but also the mental benefits (relieving stress, clearing your mind, endorphin high).

How do you find time to exercise with such a busy schedule?
For the most part, I do have a very hectic and demanding schedule 7 days a week. It is important to schedule workouts whenever you can. Some days I’m able to work out for 2 hours, other days 30 minutes. It’s important to me to keep moving each and every day.

Did staying in shape help you through the FBI National Academy?
The FBI Academy was a great experience. The fact that I arrived in very good physical condition only added to this experience. I was able to work out twice a day 5 days a week. Running, swimming, biking, weights and basketball was how I spent my down time. It was like being in college again.

What is your favorite healthy snack?
Favorite healthy snack is low fat vanilla yogurt with raisins added.

Now, I have to ask you, what is your favorite cheat meal?
Favorite cheat meal is ice cream and cookies.

Did you compete in any sports during school?
High School sports played all four years: basketball and baseball (All Catholic Honors).

If you could give just one tip to the Fit in Daytona Community on how to maintain a healthy lifestyle, what would it be?
My tip would be find several activities you like and do something every day. Keep moving forward. A good work out clears the mind, body and soul.

Do you have a favorite outdoor physical activity to do here in the Daytona Beach area?
I love to run and bike through our community. Watching the sun rise in the mornings makes you realize how insignificant some problems we encounter really are.

If you could train with any celebrity/athlete/trainer for a day, who would it be?
If I could, I would love to train with Miami Heat’s Lebron James. He is an incredible athlete w/ an outstanding work ethic.

What is your favorite and most hated exercises?
Favorite exercise: Sit ups. Held the class record at the FBI Academy.  Most hated: Pull Ups

Do you compete in any events locally?
Local events: Daytona Beach Half Marathon, Easter Beach Run, Tiger Shark Triathlon series. However, deteriorating knee health has limited my participation in some events.

What music/artist are you listening to when you workout?
My IPOD playlist is mostly contemporary pop w/ some Frank Sinatra mixed in.

What is a quote you live by?
Favorite quotes; President Theodore Roosevelt’s “Man in the Arena” hangs on the wall next to my desk.  The other is Winston Churchill’s: Success is not final, failure is not fatal, it is the courage to continue that counts.”  Comes in handy having participated and completed 14 marathons.
